“TAKING A NEW STEP, UTTERING A NEW WORD, IS WHAT PEOPLE FEAR MOST” FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
A NEW MISSION TO WIN THE ‘FIGHT TO GET INTO THE FIGHT’ AGAINST A HYBRID A2AD THREAT ENVELOPE
Lt H Brooks RA
As part of the Vanguard Strike Company within the 40 Commando RM Littoral Response Group, tactical development and experi-
mentation activity has been at
the forefront of almost every
deployment for 8 Bty Group in the
past 24 months. In its most basic
sense, this has involved testing and evaluating new ORBATs, TTPs and equipment to help inform the Commando Joint Fires and Targeting contri- bution at the sub-tactical level within the new Commando Force.
With a new mission to win the ‘fight to get into the fight’ against a hybrid A2AD threat envelope, the traditional roles have reversed, with manoeuvre now in support of fires, and fires set to receive much greater investment as we become more lethal and sophisticated. At the time of writing, Exercise ALMA CANNON 21 is ongoing in Sennybridge Training Area and is the aggregating point of this transfor- mation activity for the Tac Group, Gun Group and Fitter Section that make up 8 Bty Group; integrating the lessons learned and best practise from recent deployments on Exercise GREEN DAGGER 19.2 and 20 in Twentynine Palms, California, and the less sexy ALMA CANNON 20 in Otterburn and JOINT WARRIOR 20 in Cape Wrath, Scotland.

Guns and 81mm mortars supported by
direct fire heavy weapons. Team 8
deploy in a protect role, consisting
of ground-based air defence,
tactical precision strike and
equipment support capabil-
ities, while Team 9 are the Combat Service Support Troop and deliver the ‘move’ function. On top of the teams is a tri-service headquarters with medical, information warfare, aviation, and surface craft teams in support. As part of the twelve strong Teams 1 to 6, each patrol consists of a surface to surface (OP Ack or MFC) and air to surface (JTAC)
