Honorary Regimental Colonel’s Foreword
Colonel Neil Wilson
I am honoured to write a few lines of introduction to this fabulous production. After a year like no other, there are no shortage of stories to tell, with an action-packed journal full of exciting activities and impressive achievements.
The pace of Regimental life hasn’t dropped off one bit despite the Nation being put on a go-slow. The Regiment has continued to train for Very High Readiness, introduced and integrated new technol- ogies and equipment, along with developing the doctrine to support such capabilities, and simul- taneously deployed personnel in support of the national COVID-19 Taskforce on Op RESCRIPT. The Commando Gunner ‘can-do, let’s get on with it,’ attitude is as strong as ever and the Leadership throughout the Regiment from top to bottom, is impressive to witness. I am also pleased to report that the future of our fortress home, The Royal Citadel, appears to be in a safer place now than it has been for a while, with no foreseeable threat of closure or disposal.
I must mention a couple of individuals who continue to serve the veterans’ community; firstly, Martin Lambert-Gorwyn and Jerry Josee (Vice President and Chairman respectively), of the Commando Gunner Regroup. They have held this active organisation, including its many sub-branches, together throughout this difficult year. And to Capt Tam Watson who has taken on the laudable task of Chairmen of the Commando Association; a nationwide group which still boasts some WW2 veterans amongst its considerable membership. They, and too many others to mention, willingly give up their time and energy to provide a focal point and welfare support to many of our veterans across the world and do so for little recog- nition or reward. We thank them all.
Looking ahead, next year will be a momentous one in the history of the Commando Gunners. We will be celebrating our 60th Birthday and 40 years since the Falkland Islands conflict, so good reason for a double celebration!
