                                THE TALE OF TWO FOUNTAINS

her husband for Australia, where she is very famous for her philanthropic work. She was a very progressive lady, much ahead of her times. She returned from Australia with her family in 1866 and died in London in 1877. She is buried at the Billing Road Cemetery in Northampton, alongside her husband. A school in Northampton is named after her.
As said earlier, the Fountain was needlessly pulled down in 1962. The removal of the fountain took several days with a number of men, a crane and a blow torch needed to remove it. The steps re- mained in the Market Square until 1972 as they proved more difficult to remove. So one wonders if the structure was really that unsafe!
The steps were used by the Market Square traders to put their stocks on. The local newspaper, the Northampton Chronicle & Echo published the pictures of the fountain being dismantled.
It is believed that the Chronicle & Echo Newspaper ran a competition for the design of a sculpture to replace the fountain, which was won by the local artist and theatrical designer, Tom Osborne Robinson, who designed a Cross of Light. However, the Council Members favoured the idea of a
