  Mortar Cadre, Final Exercise
  5 RIFLES Mortar Cadre
Ahead of Op CABRIT 14, the Mortar Platoon have honed their skills, prepared future commanders, and trained new Riflemen
in the art of ‘Bombs.’ Conducted over six weeks, the course initially focused on the 81mm Mortar in the light-role; mastering the weapon and its application, learning the wealth of knowledge required to operate
it effectively, and proving their mettle in hauling kit and equipment - typically in excess of sixty kilograms.
Building confidence ‘on the gears,’ candidates were introduced to the Bulldog Mortar variant and thoroughly enjoyed the change in weight bearing and relative cover from the arduous weather conditions that November had to offer. Culminating in a two-week exercise and live fire package on the Salisbury Plain Training Area, candidates put all they had learnt into action.
Refining SOP’s through Battlegroup scenarios, whilst simultaneously avoiding the ever-present counter battery threat, the platoon is well prepared to excel in Estonia. Now bearing the proud title of ‘Mortarman,’
the newly bolstered platoon took to the Go-Kart track to celebrate, Sjt Series proving his dubious past with first place and a new track record.
