want to talk, he would happily sit, when fairy bells would sound from his phone, and
he wouldn’t hear it, and like
a scene from Sister Act, having to shout... Padre... check your phone. To which he would laugh and say, “Oh I hope Mrs Howitt (Valerie to his friends) doesn’t think I’m ignoring her”; which would have the desired effect and make you laugh.
Padre Ivan's presence
was a source of inspiration
and joy and comfort.
As we mourn the loss of
our padre, we remember
not only a dedicated spiritual guide but also a kindred spirit who embraced the cadet ethos wholeheartedly. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the memories he created.
His passing leaves a void that cannot be easily filled, but his spirit will forever echo in the halls of the
Cadet Training Centre Driffield.
To the cadets, adult volunteers, and all those who
had the privilege of knowing him, let us cherish the memories we shared with Padre Ivan and strive to embody the principles of service, camaraderie, and adventure that he so passionately embraced.
In loving memory of Padre Ivan Howitt, may his soul rest in eternal peace.
Editor’s note. It is with sincere appreciation of the work which Padre Ivan carried out, not only for the ACF but also for Seafarers who visited
the Humber ports when he was the Mission Chaplain, and to the parishioners of Hedon,
where the county holds the Freedom of the Borough. The latter was the clincher to persuade Ivan to join the ACF; he took some coercion whilst working on the docks, for obvious reasons but when
he became the Vicar of Hedon his path became clearer, and I am so pleased he took up the challenge. Thank you, Ivan, for your
service, dedication, and most of all, your friendship.
An example of Ivan’s sense of humour and fun was the article above, reproduced from the
Autumn 2008 edition.
