National championships 2022 – Malvern

How good it was to have the National’s cycle back on track, in the Midlands
for 2022 the first since 2017. We had 85 exhibitors’ stage out of 90 who entered (slightly down from our last National hosted by the Midlands Branch in 2017). That gave a total of 478 exhibits staged (with all classes containing entries) which equates to average of 5.9 entries per exhibitor.
Exhibitor cards for each class were placed in brown envelopes to ensure anonymity, this appeared
to go down extremely
of from either the judges or the exhibitors, but many compliments were received regarding
how well the show was organised with everything running smoothly without any hitches. We were like a well-oiled machine!
We, the Midlands Branch had hired a room
make the show a success. All in all, a great weekend with some fabulous high-quality vegetables on display along with some great camaraderie. We now pass the baton onto the Northern Branch and look forward to 2023’s National Championships at Newby Hall near Harrogate.

Generally, there are
eight judges at National
Championships, four
from the hosting Branch
and one from each of
the other Branches, but with having two reserve judges, in case of anyone dropping out, we also asked our reserve judges on this occasion to judge a few classes to help ensure that judging was completed before the show opened to the public.
There were no complaints, that I was aware
within the show ground to accommodate the National AGM, awards and trophy presentation in the afternoon and to enable members to gather for a little social in
the evening with food, wine, and song (entertainer).
