South East
This has been a year of ‘ticking over’ for the most part; we had display stands at two major shows, (Kent County Show and RHS Wisley Taste of Autumn), both of which were frequented by many of the visiting public. The resulting questions were varied and assorted regarding all aspects of horticultural life. I would like to say a big thank you to all of the volunteers who unstintingly come forward to staff the stands, and who help to make the stands both interesting and inviting. Whilst talking about the stands, Ron Niblett who, with his wife Anne, has been responsible for our displays for more years than I care to remember, has called
an end to his lead in this area. Thank you, Ron.
For the rst time for at least
twenty ve years the South East
region held an AGM in May. It was
attended by eighteen members,
with apologies from eleven others.
The agenda followed the usual
format and the afternoon included a
presentation by Liz Bunting which was well received. This year’s AGM will be on Saturday April 1st 2017 at 2pm. The venue is The Camden Centre, Market Square, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 2SW.
The South East committee are in urgent need of more members. Currently there are only ve of us, four of which live within the M25. This makes representation from all areas of the region extremely dif cult. The position of South East region rep is due for election in 2018. At this time I do not know if I am prepared to continue for a further three years. So expansion of the committee is essential if, as is normal, the next rep would be an active member of the committee. Steve Clements

Wildlife Area at Roffey Allotments
Here are some photographs of the wildlife area that our members have created. It was a rough area under some trees and ended up becoming a bit of a dumping ground, so we decided to create a wildlife area instead. We have built an insect home from old pallets, crocks, canes, air bricks and anything else that was left around on the site. We have now added a hedgehog house and a couple of bird houses and feeders. Members are now adding wind owers, naturalising bulbs and Pyracantha for the berries. It is an ongoing project but has transformed a rather dull and unloved part of the allotment.

The weather was ideal when the Grove Road Allotment Association in Wantage held an open afternoon during National Allotments week, reports Alan McPherson. The event was very well attended by tenants and visitors who had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of tea and cake, to learn about composting and beekeeping, and to purchase plants and tools.
In preparation for the open afternoon, the allotment bene ted from a general tidy-up of the site and plots, and the event encouraged socialisation between tenants as well as
