The Queens Dragoon Guards
The Queens Dragoon Guards (QDG) potential officer visit was a great chance for officer cadets to view a potential regiment of choice and learn all about
it in the form of tours, interviews, Q&A’ and living there for two days.
The first day started with a talk form the adjutant and head of the light cavalry commander’s course. They explained the role of the QDG, the operations they had been on and what the future may hold within the light cavalry role. Afterwards
a tour of the base and different messes was had. This was complemented with soldiers explaining their roles along the way whilst giving us a whistlestop tour
of the vehicles they use and how to use them.
The day finished with a night in the mess speaking to officers and various ambassadors of the regiment.
The next day started with a PT session then progressing into having conversations with troop commanders operating on the base which involved discussing their reasons as to why they joined the army, why they joined the
QDG and their careers. afterwards, we had an interview with the OC (Officer commanding) as to our future career aspirations and if wed potentially consider a career within the QDG.
This trip was a very good insight to barracks life and for those wishing to join the light cavalry; what the role entailed.

  Desert Rat Challenge
On 30 April 30 school children from Trumpington and Martin Bacon Academy (which supports children with SEND) attended the Desert Rat Challenge at Coldhams Lane Army Reserve Centre.
The Challenge was hosted by Cambridge University Officers’ Training Corps (CUOTC) and saw Officer Cadets and Army Reserve Staff put on a series of challenges, which tested their STEM skills, team work and initiative.
The day was also an opportunity
to get an insight into some of the different aspects of military life, administrating in the field, ceremonial duties and weapon handling.
The teachers were impressed
by how the children reacted to a different learning environment which allow some of those that struggle in conventional settings to demonstrate some of their potential.
The Desert Rat Challenge hosted by CUOTC is run bi annually giving children from around the Cambridge region to chance to experience something new and stretch and develop themselves.
