Training experiences with 254 Medical Regiment
Last January a small group of officer cadets, joined 254 Medical Regiment on one of their training weekends. Our orders informed us we were setting up a Prehospital treatment team (PHTT) to support a (theoretical) parachute jump & further incursion.
The Officer Cadets joined different sections where we learned how a PHTT is set up. Personally, I covered Medical Casualty Estimation which uses data gathered from previous exercises to estimate the number and severity
of casualties to allow for the correct allocation of resources. Others had the chance to join a medical recce.
After a 0300 deployment we spent the rest of the day shadowing and getting involved in different roles. Several of
us took on the role of Zero on the net, learning from the MSO and signaller about the tracking & movement of patients and resupplies, others were able to join the CMTs triaging the patients arriving.
We all got the chance to spend
a few hours with the main clinical
team watching them treat a variety stimulated patients such as blast injury & hypothermia. The lucky among us even had the chance to get involved!
After a productive day the PHTT was collapsed down, and we joined the members of 254 for a curry at a local restaurant to enjoy some well-deserved downtime following a successful exercise.
Developing our relationship with the 254 we have also had the opportunities to join their Cambridge Emergency Medical Conference in February and Officer Cadet Wolmarans joined them for another training weekend in July. Hopefully, here’s to many more brilliant opportunities to learn more about the role of the Army Medical Service.
