In the first week of October, OCdt Gregory and 2Lt Wood, embarked on a thrilling deer stalking expedition to the beautiful Ben Klibreck in the Scottish Highlands. Despite their novice status, they were eager to learn and experience the thrill of the hunt.
Under the expert guidance of Ian
and Captain Tilbrook, the pair quickly adapted to the challenges of the
Scottish wilderness. Their dedication
and perseverance were rewarded with remarkable success. On the very first day of the trip, OCdt Gregory managed to shoot a 15st 4lb stag. The following day, 2Lt Wood also achieved a significant milestone, bagging a 14.12st stag.
The unseasonably warm and sunny weather conditions provided ideal hunting circumstances. However, on the final day of the trip, the pair decided to try their hand at fly fishing. Unfortunately, their fishing skills were not as sharp as
their stalking abilities, and they soon found themselves seeking solace in the local pub.
Reflecting on the experience, OCdt Gregory shared his enthusiasm: “This is one of the best things I’ve done recently. It was an amazing trip and an amazing experience. This trip would be way too expensive to do outside of the UOTC.
I also want to thank Lt Col Barrington- Barnes and Captain Tilbrook for extending an invitation to us.”
The successful hunt and the camaraderie shared during the trip will undoubtedly be cherished memories
for both. This experience has not only provided them with valuable outdoor skills but has also instilled in them a deep appreciation for the Scottish Highlands and the art of deer stalking.
