At the start of 2018, we were shocked by the death of our President, Brigadier ‘Bertie’ Woolnough CBE on 21st March 2018. He was appointed Commanding Officer of
the 1st Battalion Mercian Volunteers in the Autumn of 1978 after attending the National Defence College. He took the Battalion on Exercise ‘Crusader’ in 1980.

Brigadier H A Woolnough CBE, 16th April 1939 – 21st March 2018
with him in Mercian Volunteers. It was privilege and an honour to have known and served with him. We thank him for all he did for our Association and for being such a loyal and huge supporter of everything Mercian Volunteers.
Many the association attended his funeral at Coombe Bisett on 12th April 2018 while others held small ceremonies at the Mercian Grove, National Memorial Arboretum and the Shrubbery, Kidderminster.
The Eagle flag flew at half-mast over the Mercian Grove in Alrewas NMA to coincide with the funeral of the late MVRA President, Brigadier Bertie Woolnough CBE
