SPORTS & ADVENTUROUS TRAINING
  Major TR Barker RTR
With an Army in Scotland ban on sporting activi- ties and Adventurous Training, in line with national COVID 19 guidance, much of 2021 saw another fallow year for the Regiment’s sportsmen and women.
By the time the Regiment recovered from Exercise WESSEX STORM national guidelines were starting to be eased and we were able to begin a gradual return to many of our normal outdoor sports; the rugby and football teams leading the way with fixtures against several local teams and a spirited performance in the Dundee 7’s competition from our egg-chasers.
In October whilst much of the Regiment was on Exercise KHANJAR OMAN elements of HQ and A Sqn deployed to Cameron Barracks, Inverness, to complete a rotational three-week AT concentration with troops completing a day each of mountain biking, hill-walking, rock-climbing, and canyoning. With sev- eral Munros ‘bagged’ each week there were plenty of tired legs, and a few sore bodies after fairly spectacular dismounts from the regimental mountain bike fleet.
Break in the Weather on Cairn Gorm
Tpr Naiqua cartwheeling over the handlebars on flat ground after grabbing the wrong brake lever during skid training was a particular highlight for the rest of his group.
Some of our fittest individuals have represented the Regiment in the British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF; think CrossFit but with less beards, grunt- ing, and backslapping) Scottish Championships throughout the latter half of the year with a number of medal-earning finishes. The endurance athletes in the Regiment were able to complete a pair of demanding events too, the Spean Bridge Commando March and the 1st (UK) Division Rhino Challenge, both weighted runs over frankly awful terrain and returned impres- sive times across the board, Lt Roberts, SSgt Jarret, SSgt Baldwin, and Tpr Foley fighting hard for the title of ‘Fastest in the Regiment’.
