forces spans nearly forty years. This began as a junior medical officer in the Royal Navy, completing the All-Arms Commando Course and then serving with 45 Commando RM. Following specialist training in emergency medicine in New Zealand and Australia, he joined the Army and has served as a consultant within the regimental faculty of 16 Medical Regiment throughout much of the 21st Century. He has 10 operational tours under his belt and was Mentioned in Dispatches for service during OP HAVEN in 1991.
His mountaineering career kicked off with an ascent of Mt Blanc with two pals from the Scouts at the age of fifteen – memorable for the trio being obliged to
money savings with nothing to spare for hut fees! Following University, the Royal Marines provided the perfect spring board for climbing and skiing and during this time he participated in expeditions to the Cordillera Blanca in Peru and to the West Ridge of Everest in 1992 with the British Services expedition, reaching 8550m in the Hornbein Couloir on the north face of the mountain. He led an expedition from 45 Commando to Denali, Alaska, which was successful in climbing the mountain by the Cassin Ridge.
Alpine climbing and skiing continued during these years including several technical winter alpine ascents, in addition to steadily ticking off most of the classic Scottish winter climbs. During his
Expedition (Spirit of Scott) in 2012 and has led numerous ski mountaineer- ing expeditions. In addition to previous service as a committee member, he is also Technical Director for Army SkiMo and has led the British Military entries for the Patrouille des Glaciers international military ski patrol race since 2014.
He lives with Heather on the northern slopes of the Campsie Fells outside of Glasgow, where he serves as a doctor in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and also in the aeromedical division of the Scottish Ambulance Service when not deployed. When not in Scotland they can usually be found in La Grave, France - their much-loved European base.
