                                  OBITUARY
MALCOLM HOGGART EVANS FNVS
12th August 1936 –
11th February 2024
It is with great sadness to report the death of the Northern Branch President Malcolm Evans FNVS who passed away on the 11th February 2024 following a short illness.
To most Malcolm seemed like a “dyed in the wool Yorkshire man” but was in fact born in Wales, and moved to Horbury, Yorkshire when he was a child. Malcolm started with the NVS in the now defunct South Yorkshire DA. He served on the Northern Branch Committee for many years and became Chairman in 1999 and eventually President
in 2012. Malcolm was one of the 3 people making up the NVS judge’s panel.
Malcolm was a fantastic advocate for both the NVS and in particular the Northern Branch. Along with
his wife Margaret he would be
seen at many of the shows and would always offer advice and encouragement to anyone who asked. He was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed by the Northern Branch.
Malcolm leaves behind his Wife Margaret, Daughters Kathryn, Susan, and son David as well
as 7 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.
Northern Branch
 MEMBERS 20000 TO 29999
The Northern branch lost its longest serving member Malcolm Evans who was president of the branch and vice president of the society. A founder member of the society Malcolm
was involved in many official duties throughout his time and well thought of by all who knew him. Condolences to his family from the Northern Branch. I will miss his warm welcoming attitude every time we met up. Malcolm always had a positive attitude towards the society and plenty words of wisdom to share with everyone.
Although this report is for the summer addition of the magazine, I am writing this at the end of April when we are waiting for the temperatures to rise and settle down. Last week we had two sharp frosts followed by more rain. Still no snow this year Facebook allows us all to see what progress is been made around the country with leeks and onions getting planted out under covers and the giant onions looking tremendous already. I grew for the giant onion back
in 1992 and even managed to get within
an ounce of the record only to be beaten
by Vince Throupe when he increased the record by a whole pound to just over 10 Lbs. now the record is 19 Lbs 12 oz.
The Northern District Associations are actively holding meetings around the district and attending shows. The first one we will
be attending is the Harrogate Spring flower show.
I have stepped back from the organising of the display as I am still very busy at work and find that I am unable to put in the hours that is required but the members of the District Association have stepped up and taken on the role now. I am sure it will be
a great experience for all involved and so rewarding to meet up with other growers and keen amateur gardeners.
Work at the moment has now reached the peak of the spring sowing and this will drop off quickly, but we have already started to sow the winter cyclamen. We will continue sowing perennials and summer autumn bedding in the next few months.
We are still looking for some volunteers who would be willing to join the Northern branch committee and take the branch forward into the future. We need to have fresh voices and ideas to develop the society in positive ways. If anyone feels that they could fill any position, we would be pleased to hear from you. Our contact details are in the Members section of the website and also in the front of the magazine.
Anyway, I hope you all have a successful growing season and enjoy showing and eating the produce that you grow.

  North East Derbyshire DA (NEDDA)
Plans for our annual D.A. Show on Sunday 8th September are well underway and nearing completion. If anyone wants further information or a show schedule, contact details for NEDDA members can be found in the NVS Directory.
With plants being grown and donated by D.A. members, our annual plant sale that’s almost entirely facilitated by John Croot and John Goodall is going very well when going to press. The proceeds from the plant sales are fundamental
in ensuring the D.A. can function financially. .
Our annual day-out/garden visit is currently being finalised to a private garden in Pleasley Vale in July; fingers crossed the continuous rain we are currently enduring will have stopped by then. Pleasley Vale being home to the first hosiery mill built (in 1784) & owned by William Hollins.
This year the D.A. is venturing out with a second garden visit, this time to the orchard of the fruit guru himself Mr Adrian Baggeley in October.
Our monthly meetings continue to be held on the third Wednesday of
the month unless otherwise stated at Pleasley Miners Welfare NG19 7PD.
