2019 AMS Athletics and Tug of War
Championships – Team RADC
Maj Sarah Armstrong RADC
Now firmly established in the RADC sporting calendar, the 2019 AMS Athletics and Tug of War Championships took place in June at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Although smaller than most units, Team RADC came out
in force to compete against our AMS colleagues across throws, jumps, track and tug of war disciplines to secure a remarkable 7th place overall (out of 15 teams) – our strongest finish yet. In the female competition alone, our ladies team placed a superb 4th place, a phenomenal achievement firmly establishing the RADC as a force to be reckoned with.
The competition kicked off with the distance events, allowing our middle distance and endurance athletes to compete
before the heat of the day. LCpl Rose
made an impressive debut, successfully reaching the final in the 800m against
strong competition. A great job, made
all the more notable as she’d travelled
all the way from Cyprus to compete. Sgt Gotora and Capt Blyth, now seasoned veterans of the competition valiantly stepped-up to the steeplechase, tackling
the water jump with great humour but questionable technique! Capt Fear also found himself on steeplechase duty, after a miscommunication at the start of the 5000m left him out of the starting line-up. Although a complete beginner to the event, he demonstrated impressive endurance, tearing up the entire field to clinch a gold medal. Not content with just one endurance event, Capt
Fear also medalled in the 1500m, adding a bronze to his collection.
In the throws, notable achievements came from LCpl Irving who dug deep to throw
to bronze medal position in the javelin and LCpl Lawati who gave another strong javelin performance, narrowly missing out on a finalist’s position. Meanwhile, across at the sand pit, WO2 Leon showcased excellent technique to jump to a 3rd place finish in the triple jump and LCpl Irving (still fresh from her javelin podium position!) jumped to 3rd in the long jump.
Over in the tug of war arena, training preparations were led by Maj (Retd) Findlay and our ladies team captain LCpl Williams, who delivered coaching advice to the fresh faces of the tug of war team (LCpl Marcus,
