5km fun-run to raise awareness within our community and promote a healthier lifestyle. Although the participation was open to all nations we focused our efforts towards the smokers within our community. The event was a success, with a total of 35 runners, and electric toothbrushes and dental goodie bags were given out as prizes. The UK National Military Representative NMR (One Star Officer), who also participated in the event, thanked the SHAPE Dental Team for their brilliant efforts and encouraged us to make this an annual event.
Now let’s talk about the team’s physical resilience. It all started with ‘The Mons
Half Marathon” to kick start our spring fitness mania. It turned out to be a beautiful morning for running. Maj Abu-Mughaisib ran
the half marathon while Cpl Robinson and LCpl Mhlana took part in the 10k event. All enjoyed the day. Cpl Robinson got carried away with her fitness drive as she went on to do another long-distance run in Brussels “Charleroi 15km” only a few weeks after the Mons event! LCpl Mhlana also went
on to take part in the AMS athletics and represented the RADC in the 400m sprint event. Then came MATTs L1 week, a brilliant training package which included super- realistic American robotic dummies used during BCDT training. We were also the first to experience the new Army fitness test, which we thought was much easier yet more relevant.
Along came the summer and the team supported the British community event “Brit
Fete SHAPE”. Cpl Robinson supported the Navy chefs at the Fish & Chip stall. Everyone enjoyed the day and lots of money was raised for the community funds.
Finally, at least for this article, was another international event “International bring and share cuisine day”. Every NATO dental
team brought a national food delicacy to share. Everyone enjoyed the day and a joint photograph was taken to celebrate the event.
In the background, the team have all also been very busy with self-funded studies. Maj Abu-Mughaisib is currently on his final year of his MSc in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Edinburgh. Cpl Robinson has just completed her 3rd year towards
BA (honours) Business Management with the Open University. LCpl Mhlana has successfully completed Access to Nursing HE Diploma with distinction.
A great team is a group of leaders tied together by a shared sense of purpose. It’s a group that realises “the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts.” A great team is made up of people who thrive on the achievements of each other and who are not jealous of each others successes. We believe we are on our journey to become such a team!
