 MILITARY TRAINING
JNCO
Development
in All Aspects
Sgt Gemma Johnson RADC
Every soldier and officer has attended
a military course whether it was basic training, for promotional purposes or to enhance their development. Once we pass a course we usually look back on the comical occurrences whenever chatting
to colleagues who were on the course
or who have had similar experiences. However, do we really look back on what we found difficult and what obstacles had to be overcome, whether that is physical, knowledge based or emotional? And if not, why not? We should always strive to better ourselves and question why things are conducted in the manner they are.
One of the biggest gripes I occasionally hear from RADC soldiers is that when they did their PNCO CLM they either felt unprepared ‘like a bunny in headlights’
or had to put in a lot of extra effort and struggled to pass the course. As a SNCO I felt it was my responsibility to provide more support and I wanted to do more towards the ‘green’ side of our JNCOs military careers. On settling into my role in an RHQ, I was able to put a training package together.
On Monday 10th June 2019, three RADC JNCOs attended the first PNCO CLM Pre- Course Preparation Training Day. Topics covered by myself and the local infantry
unit included Basic Field craft, Patrolling, Harbours, Intro to Orders, 7 Question Estimate, All Arms Tactical Aide Memoire, Section Attacks, Model Building and Patrol Reports. All three RADC JNCOs went on
to pass the PNCO Cadre with confidence. Here is some of the feedback they provided:
LCpl Dimau, DC Aldershot
“I found the refresher day very beneficial because since I passed out of Basic Training in August 2017, I had forgotten certain skills during my learning pathway. The orders were much easier to grasp as I already had a brief insight to what was in the process, moreover the refresher topics of green skills and handouts of hand signals etc really made a difference for my PNCO.”
LCpl Rudd, DC Edinburgh
“I feel that it has been extremely beneficial
in order to prep me for my CLM as I had
not carried out many green skills since
basic training and I feel that this is a great opportunity for future DN’s who may be
in the same situation. A lot of the training started to click back into place when we were on the CLM (the training staff did go over topics such as orders and section attacks) and having had that extra training you provided beforehand certainly helped, making me feel more confident in what I was doing.”
LCpl McNally, 4 MED REGT
“I think for DNs in the same position, doing the refresher training before the course
is a must as it helped me out so much. The handouts came in handy, especially with the classroom lessons on the course.
Thank you for running the training, I really appreciated it and it did make the difference to my performance on the PNCO course.”
From this, it was evident that this training needs to continue in order to support our JNCOs. It is important that we are investing in them, empowering them to do well in
all aspects and boost their confidence in preparation for this course and for future endeavours. There is currently another training day organised already and I am keen to repeat this as and when required. WO1 Irvine has been keeping me informed of the PNCO CLM courses on which RADC JNCOs are loaded, but please do let me know of any omissions. When I am posted where I can no longer conduct this training
I would be prepared to coach & mentor another RADC JNCO or handover to another SNCO to continue this in the future.
