If you board a train at Zürich and head south-east, you will sweep beneath its lake, kiss the bor- der with Liechtenstein and then begin to climb
through beautiful alpine valleys. Two hours into your journey and the urban sprawl, not that such a thing exists in Switzerland, has been left behind; it is farmland and snow-tipped mountains that now dominate the panorama. Truly picturesque, but not a pinch on Arriva Trains Wales.

‘Cricket on Ice’ has been a staple fixture of the Swiss cricketing calendar. Run by British expats, six teams are invited to St. Moritz to take part in a T20 competition where talent and competitiveness are replaced, largely, by sociableness and an empha- sis on playing in the ‘spirit of the game.’ Perfect for Guards Cricket Club.
Having applied for a place in 2021, Guards CC was asked to reapply the following year and was even- tually bumped from the reserve list into the main draw (now eight teams) in the summer of 2022.
 The main event, however, takes
place adjacent to the racing on the southern part of the lake. Cricket has been played on the lake in some form or other since 1988, but since 2004
– have left their beloveds on Valentine’s Day and gathered in a hotel bar in St. Moritz, ready to do battle on the ice.
