O– 30 Platoon, Borneo Company
n Friday 3rd February 2023, 30 Platoon descended upon The Manakamana, an authentic Nepalese restaurant in Camberley.
This was the second in a series of diversity and inclusion events designed to introduce us to the eclectic cultures of the International Cadets within 30 Platoon. OCdt Karki, who hosted the event, wanted to use the night to give us the desire to want to visit Nepal and explore the country in the future, as well as share his love for his home food and culture. He stoked excitement for the event by regaling us with a passionate presentation on the diverse culture of Nepal, chiefly the key religious sites and mountains one could explore.
We were offered a series of classic Nepalese dishes as starters: Sel Roti (a churros-like bread made from rice flour), crispy chicken chilli, and momos, a variation of meat filled dumplings.
For the main course, we all received a Thakali Kana Set of nine different foods:
a main curry dish of either chicken, mut-
ton or pork, accompanied with rice, a
lentil Jhaneko Daal, vegetable curry,
Kagatiko Achar (lemon pickle), Dahi
(kurd-like dish), salad, Ghee (butter
sauce) and Kauli Ra Aalut Sabgi (cauli-
flower and potato). Throughout the night,
OCdt Karki introduced each dish to explain the ingredients and to help us understand the décor of the restaurant, discussing some of the artwork and photography which reflect the landscape of Nepal and their traditions. Most unexpectantly, no cutlery was provided for this main course and so we were asked to eat with our hand to enhance the
experience of the night, a common practice in Nepal.
Overall, it was a very wonderful evening filled with delicious food and great service from the staff at The Manakamana. 30 Platoon would thoroughly recommend everyone to explore this varied and deep culture, and we look forward to our next cultural night hosted by OCdt Gyabeng from Ghana.
