In 2014, my time as a rifleman in Gurkha Com- pany Sittang at Sandhurst, watching the impres- sive instructors and OCdts progress through
the Commissioning Course greatly motivated me to become an instructor one day. This motivation was further flamed through my experiences as an Armoured Cavalry Tactics Instructor in RATD where I spent time instructing recently commis- sioned Cavalry Officers.
Being selected to be the first ever instructor at RMAS from the RDG and, having the opportunity to instruct at a college straightaway, was a dream come true and a privilege.
My instructor journey started with 7 Pl, Waterloo Coy in Junior Term. This was a critical period for me, as an instructor, to invest on the OCdts to impart my knowledge and experiences and ensure that they had a solid foundation to move forward and ultimately perform well for the remainder of the CC.
As part of the new initiative for Intermediate Term, OCdts from within a Coy were mixed together to create new Pls with new instructors leading them. Together with the newly formed 1Pl, Blenheim Coy, Intermediate Term allowed me to explore a trans- formational leadership style. Pushing more respon- sibility and accountability to the OCdts, this saw them flourish in competence reaching the potential they had demonstrated by the end of term.

Senior Term was ‘full send’ for the OCdts. A term where the instructors are there to provide guid- ance where it is required, all substantive work is done by the OCdts with the Pl running itself. A great performance from 1 Pl saw them achieve a well-deserved 3rd place at the Sovereign’s Ban- ner competition. This term was culminated by Ex DYNAMIC VICTORY, a 2-week overseas exercise where the Coy, Pl and individual OCdts are tested on everything they had learnt at RMAS.
I continue to be impressed by the calibre of the OCdts that come through RMAS. Their ability to perform under stressful conditions and learn things at a rapid pace due to the condensed training pro- gramme is astonishing. It is a personal point of pride for me to be part of this organisation and feel privileged to be able to impart my knowledge and experience to future leaders of the British Army.
