Mike Raine needs no introduction, having attended his virtual workshops I can vouch for his massive brain of all things Snowdonia... I am really impressed with the depth of knowledge of all the seasons. The really interesting elements for me are the Archaeology, Myths and Legends, glaciation and geology.
Get your head into the book, digest it, go explore and find those gems and this is where you can become the story teller on the hill, giving that 360 degree/4G experience on top of the fauna and flora bits and bobs. I’ve tested my knowledge on groups and individuals in Snowdonia and I’ve found that the majority love a good story and are less interested in the lichen... (Not surprising really...Lichen is a wee bit boring!) I do have a great love of discovering new flowers and fungi and spotting the hidden wildlife on the hills.
The quantity and quality of the photos have massively improved, better detailed explanations add a real richness to this
edition, I don’t think Mike could improve on this, unless he created a virtual interactive edition with knowledge assessments and downloadable content or an app where you can have it on the phone instead of lumping the book around, my first edition got wet a few times... my fault of course, tesco bags aren’t as waterproof as required!
This book is the single point of information for almost every walker and climber I know, it’s a must either on the hill, crag, in the tent or on the sofa with feet up and educating yourself of the wonders of Snowdonia! The really good thing it isn’t just Snowdonia it applies to... there is much in there that applies to other ranges and regions in the UK, Snowdonia is a special place and as such deserves its own book!
I can honestly say that this is one of the most valuable sources of information that I have bought in years, there aren’t many books out there that delivers the depth
of content, the quality of pictures and information. I now recommend this book to all those I take onto the hills as the ONLY guide to the uplands for hill walkers and climbers in Snowdonia. Thank you Mike... we love it!
