P. 49

conditions ranging from dislocations to altitude illness. The first aid kit lists at the back of the book are probably one of the most useful parts of the book and also show the lake louise score card and an AMS and HACE/HAPE flowchart.
If I ever want to offer some high altitude advice prior to an expedition, in addition to the book above and in conjunction
with professional assistance, I will also suggest that expedition members read the free downloadable booklet produced by MEDEX called Travel at High Altitude (MEDEX) https://www.medex.org.uk/ the-medex-book/. This booklet not only provides advice on how to treat altitude illness, but also offers some sobering case studies on altitude illness that brings the reality of this serious condition home to the expedition members who may have no concept of this hidden danger when mountaineering.
My final read is the AMA journal, military PXRs and the excellent Trek and Mountain Magazine https://trekandmountain.com/ Whenever I am in search of inspiration for my next trip, these places are where I turn to. Trek & Mountain magazine, for example, is the perfect place to start and offers full spread, glossy articles such as the Cuillin Traverse, Your First Alpine North Face and Climbing Mt Kenya & Kili. They also had an excellent article on Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja, the ex SBS soldier who took the world by storm by climbing all the worlds 8000m peaks in a single season.
This can then be followed up by obtaining the detailed information you require for a JSATFA by searching for PXRs on the ATGA ATSYS system on MODNET.
I hope this has shed some light on what may be useful reading for your future mountaineering adventures, firstly to keep you safe and secondly to enable you to enjoy the fantastic opportunities that we are afforded in the military. Happy reading!
