WING SPORTS ACTIVITIES LAUNCH
WITH ARCHERY TASTER DAY AT
MIDDLESBROUGH SQUADRON
By Flying Officer Helle McCollin
The 2025 Wing Sports activities kicked off in early
January with an archery taster day at Middlesbrough
Squadron, where 20 cadets and 7 staff members
braved the chilly weather to enjoy a day of archery.
The event proved to be a great success, offering
cadets the chance to either refine their archery
skills, try the sport for the first time, or gain valuable
experience as instructors.
Flight Sergeant Helen Bridges, who became a
qualified archery instructor in August 2024, took on
her first teaching role since certification. As part of
her ongoing development, she used the event to put
her training into practice and further enhance her
instructional skills. She will soon be leading archery
sessions for cadets at her squadron and was eager
to use this event as an opportunity for hands-on
experience.
The cadets were split into two groups. While one
group took part in archery, the other worked toward
their Blue Space and Blue Wings qualifications. The
groups alternated throughout the day, ensuring
everyone had the chance to participate in both
activities.
Feedback from the cadets included:
•
“Archery was amazing!” – Cadet Harvey Carr,
2337 (Northallerton) Sqn
•
“Very entertaining!” – Cadet Ellis Petherbridge,
399 (Beverley) Sqn
•
“Wide variety of activities to enjoy” – Cadet
EvieMarie Smart, 2168 (Yeadon) Sqn
•
“Lots of memories made” – Cadet Jessica
Miller, 2040 (Richmond) Sqn
Pretty nice
here, a little
cold though
•
“Lots of things to do while you’re not on
archery” – Cadet Freddie Gowlett-Littlewood,
2487 (Easingwold) Sqn
•
“Pretty nice here, a little cold though” – Cadet
Hao Zheng, 2040 (Richmond) Sqn
At the end of the day, 20 cadets earned their Blue
Cyber Badges, and 6 cadets achieved their Blue
Wings. Every cadet shot at least 10 arrows, with the
competition concluding in a thrilling showdown. The
highest score of the day was achieved by Cadet Eve
Bentley from Richmond Squadron, who scored 26
points with three arrows.
