From May to September 1945, he served with the Special Liaison Section at the British Embassy, Athens, which may have been a cover for work with the Secret Intelligence Service, as well as other duties. In the course of his wartime service, he was made an Officer of the order of the British Empire (OBE). He was mentioned in despatches twice: in France, 1940 and in Syria, 1942.
