The Not Forgotten Association (NFA),
a charity which provides entertainment and recreation for the serving wounded and the ex-service community with disabilities, kindly invited members of The Mercian Regiment to spend a day at Wimbledon.
On the 28th June, Ptes Swindells and Jack, both of 1 MERCIAN, travelled down to London to meet with the Assistant Regimental Secretary for Nottingham, Ms Cindy Baines, to enjoy one of the hottest days on record at Wimbledon. Our seats on Centre
Court were superb and allowed us a great view of play as well as time to scan the crowds for known faces (The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge being the most famous) and Pte Swindells even managed to get Andy Murray’s autograph although he failed to get a smile!
As well as watching some action packed tennis, there was time to walk around the grounds, soak up the atmosphere, visit the gift shop and then enjoy afternoon tea, along with the infamous Wimbledon strawberries and cream. Ptes Crawford and Hunter, also
of 1 MERCIAN, enjoyed a similar day on Number One Court, the following day.
All in all, it was an enjoyable, memorable experience for all of us and our thanks go out to the NFA who were outstanding hosts on both days.
 LCpl Derby XXIX
Congratulations go to LCpl Derby on his promotion granted to him by the Colonel
of the Regiment, Brigadier Sharpe OBE on 6 Apr. This year has seen The Regimental Mascot fulfilling many engagements; alongside attending Freedom parades, passing out parades, various charity events
and visiting schools he has continued to warrant his promotion by being on his best behaviour (apart from butting the Asst Regtl Secretary in her office!) at some more unusual locations; parading at various sporting venues, riding on a Ferris Wheel, going on a tram ride through Nottingham
and partaking on a cruise along the River Trent to name but a few. All in the good name of the Mercian Regiment and always attracting a crowd many of whom are
kind enough to donate to the Mercian Benevolent Fund.
Life is on the “up” for LCpl Derby since he has been promoted!
Oh how the dignitaries laughed when the ticket inspector asked for the Ram’s ticket!
