We are grateful to the owners of the brands concerned for advice and for supply of free material.
The manufacturers of Dalefoot vegetable compost, containing wool and bracken, state that no fertiliser is needed and none was used.
3. Results
See Schedule (right)
The yields may be described as follows (Section 1.* refers):
Incredipeatfree® with Incredicrop®
Mean yield/plant 784g ‘Good’
Dalefoot Vegetable®
Mean yield/plant 678g ‘Good’
Sylvagrow®/John Innes 2®/Growsure®
Mean yield/plant 566g ‘Satisfactory’
It may be noted that Dalefoot Vegetable showed the highest yields for much of the trial, but Incredipeatfree® with Incredicrop® (highest yield in total for trial) continued to produce beans for longer (See graph below).
4. Conclusions
The 2021 data indicate the suitability of two brands of peat-free substrates for growing climbing beans in pots:
(a) In the manner described and
(b) For the purpose described.
This year (2022) we will measure yields from: (a) Incredipeatfree® substrate with
increased Incredicrop®
(b) Miracle Gro®® as previously but with
pelleted fertiliser.
(c) New Horizon® with pelleted fertiliser.
