Iarrived at the Cav and Guards Club in November 2022, to be congratu- lated by most (and commiserated with by some) – “Elliot you are going to be the Ops Officer”. Six months later and arriving straight onto an Ex Spring Storm deployment; it has certainly been a roller- coaster ride! The past year has seen Light Dragoons exercise on three continents: proving fierce dismounted soldiers in the Kenyan crucible, bold maneouvirsts in the forests of eastern Europe, and small team specialists in the jungles of Brunei. As if that wasn’t enough, Light Dragoons represented the nation in the coronation
of King Charles III, simulated squadron advances in the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer, excelled through pre-deployment training, and found time for PNCO cadres and regimental ranges.
The Regiment kicked off the year with Ex Steel Dragoon. A regimental range package at Castle Martin, and the chance for some friendly scrapping in the sand dunes and some character building in the cold Welsh Seas.
C Squadron deployed to Kenya under the leadership of Maj Freeman and Capt Riall,
gaining recognition for a strong perfor- mance in demanding conditions. Acting as bde recce in front of the Coldstream Guards, the Legion quickly gathered accolades from the British Army Training Unit Kenya for inquisitive soldiers, the highest of standards and exceptional discipline. All while surprising the enemy (Scots Guards) who assumed they were playing with ‘fat tankies’. They were wrong!
The coronation of His Majesty, King Charles III led to a detachment of Light Dragoons dusting off their drill boots and taking part in Operation Golden Orb.
