After ringing in New Year with the dulcet tones of LCpls Nixon and Odebrecht’s duet on the Op CABRIT karaoke machine, it was back to duties for the UAP in Estonia. The remainder of the team completed their cold weather course, with the questionable advantage of knowing exactly what to expect, having watched many colleagues plunge into the icy lake when providing medical cover for the previous iterations.
We were indebted to the REME for fixing our several bro- ken dantherm heaters, allowing the use of the inflatable cold weather tent with heating system on the chilly final exercise. A vital capability that was used for the first time on CABRIT, ensuring that patients were treated in the optimal environment and that the Medical Officer’s personal administration in the field was not unduly tested.
LCpl Simpson returned to UK to successfully complete his Ranger cadre, having posted on promotion to Cpl and looking forward to trips to warmer climes. Sgt Halmonroyd returned to his home unit after six months trawled as the UAP SNCO and becoming an integral and valued part of the team. We wish them both well in their next postings.
The UAP welcomed Sgt Cooke as our new Med SNCO and Sgt Kelly as Nursing SNCO. Sgt Cooke took on the vital task of co-ordinating the care for the ROG and ensuring their care progressed with the remainder of the regiment deployed. As well as taking on the myriad tasks that fall to the med senior, she has found time to be identified as an emerging talent in clay pigeon shooting and should represent the Army Medical Service (AMS) in years to come. Sgt Kelly quickly put her own stamp on the UAP nurse role, including briefing the RSM on acceptable ways she can be woken when required for an emer- gency during an exercise rest period.
Our JNCOs have been joined by LCpl Wilson and LCpl Whatley and the team have provided support to both the KRH and outside tasks including CAMBRIAN PATROL, Op LIGHTFOOT (Germany) and Ex SCORPIO STRIDE. The team were resplendent in their new jumpers thanks to LCpl Nixon. LCpl Hall performed admirably in swimming, representing the unit and AMS, bringing in some excellent results. LCpl Wilson has represented the AMS in hockey and LCpl Odebrecht in football. There were also opportunities for personal develop- ment and AT, with experiences ranging from battlefield studies in Berlin to battling up hills in Brecon.
The UAP deployed in support of the battlegroup on Ex IRON CYCLONE. LCpl Odebrecht was selected by the media team
to inspire the next generation in becoming the face of CMT recruiting. Photos and videos appeared through the British Army account across an array of social media platforms (sev- eral of which had to be explained to Maj West).
The exercise ended with congratulations to LCpl Nixon, LCpl Odebrecht and LCpl Whatley who were selected for promo- tion to Cpl. We will say goodbye to LCpl Nixon and LCpl Odebrecht after three years at KRH and we are pleased that LCpl Whatley will promote into the vacant Cpl PID after his short time at KRH as a LCpl.
Next year will see the continued effort to medically prepare the regiment for upcoming deployments. Once the vaccinat- ing, audios and medical training are done, we look forward to deploying again as a UAP with the KRH BG on Ex COMBINED RESOLVE and beyond.
