Capt Trowbridge lays a trap for the vegans
John wins the sweepstake for the second time
isn’t it?” Nathan of course reacted as you might expect a stal- wart leader of men, not to mention experienced hunter, to react: he squeaked “Um, yes thank you!” and ran off. It transpired that Rothiemurchus Lodge was also accommodating a group from the University of Edinburgh on the floor above us, and they were all vegans. It wasn’t long before we were asked if we wouldn’t mind moving the contents of our game larder from under their window, and turning down the bagpipes on the MegaSpeaker. There’s no pleasing some people.
The week progressed with all participants experiencing shoot- ing and stalking, many for the first time which is where these expeditions really show their value. We managed to fit in a Halloween dinner night complete with fancy dress, visited the Tomatin whisky distillery for a highly educational tour involv- ing some mandatory tasting, and even tried to keep our eye in at the local clay ground. Such is the quality of the Officers’ shoot- ing that Tpr Petit, who as far as I know had never even held a shotgun before, came away from an afternoon on the clays as the top shot. Let’s hope the Troop Leaders’ tank gunnery is better! Fortunately, there will be plenty of time to practice, with planning for fieldsports in 2024 already underway. The mess will attend the Lower Woodford Shoot at the end of January to close this season, before planning begins for Ex HIGHLAND HAWK 2024.
