Oundle Historical Society aims to promote interest in the history and development of the town of Oundle and the surrounding district. The Society was formed in 1983 by a small group of people interested in the local history of the area. Current membership is about 75.
We organise a programme of talks on local history from September to May at 7.30pm at Oundle Methodist Church, Drummingwell Lane on the second Friday of alternate months, and visits to places of interest during the summer months. There is so much to enjoy.
Our next meeting is on 10th
September “Quenching One’s Thirst:
The Rise and Fall of Pubs in Oundle” by Peter Irving. The attached photographs show one of the old Inn signs, previously displayed at the “Wagon & Horses” when it was the called the “Old Hind”, and the ‘Three Tuns’ trademark of the John Smith Brewery. (Photographs courtesy of David Parker.)
The photograph of the “Eagle and Child”
shows the crest adopted by Nicholas Latham whose
charities are the subject of our November meeting, (Photograph by Robin Rowe.)
Our Chairman, David Bond will speak at our January 2022 meeting on “Oundle
and the Domesday Book”. The plaque shown is attached to the Market Hall. (Photograph by Philip Kitchin.)
Several members carry out research into various aspects of local history, often resulting in the publication of books or papers, and have delivered talks on a number of occasions.
Oundle Historical Society is a member of The British Association for Local History and The Northamptonshire Heritage Forum.
The annual subscription of £7.50 covers free entry to talks. Non-member visitors, who are always welcome, pay £2. Coffee and biscuits are served. Visits incur a small extra charge purely to cover costs. Tea and cake is usually available!
