Ian Simpson – Legumes
Following on from a successful Scottish Branch Championships, 2023 saw a number of our intrepid Scottish Branch members head over the border to exhibit further afield once more, starting with Jim Pearson and Ian Simpson heading off to South Wales to the Welsh Branch Championships at the wonderful venue of St. Fagans Museum of History.
Jim achieved a 2nd prize in the shallots, and peas, a 3rd in the legume class, a
3rd in the class of six veg types, one of each and was also delighted with his 5th place in the UK tap Root Competition. Meanwhile, Ian Simpson achieved a 1st prize in the peas and the legume class, with both exhibits containing the Stalley Longpod Peas. Ian had heard about these peas and was delighted to have been
given some pea seed by Scottish Branch Member, Peter Fitch, after seeing them growing in Peter’s garden at the Scottish Branch garden visit in 2022. In other classes, Ian was awarded 2nd prize in
the ‘18 points and under’ collection, the French Beans plus a 3rd place in the Small Fruited Tomatoes and the Stump Carrots, and a 4th in the Millenium Class. All in
all a very good start for the Scottish contingency.
Meanwhile, on the same weekend as the Welsh Branch Championships, The North-East Horticultural Society Championships at The Lousia Centre, Stanely, were attended by Gareth Cameron and John Currie. Gareth was delighted to have won class 13 with
