Class05-Peas-1st-Jim Gradie - Show Perfection
Stanely - Gareth’s onions
Cauliflower, two Blue Belle Potatoes and two pods of Show Perfection Peas. Jim
also won the Cauliflower Class, which he has now won on six occasions and we are delighted that Jim will do a Zoom talk for
us on the topic of growing Cauliflowers,
to share his methods. Again, Jim grew the variety ‘Zaragoza’ who’s club root resistance works well in his garden. Jim also gained
a 4th prize in the Long Beetroot and a 4th prize in the Pot Leeks, Well done Jim.
What a great set of results from our Scottish Branch Team. Well done to all who entered.
A big thank you also goes to our Scottish Branch Judge at the National Championships. This was John (Hoss) Martin’s first time judging at the Nationals and he thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. (Including Simon’s quiz alongside his new quiz teammate Sean Egan from Ireland).
After the prize giving, some of our award recipients for 2023 who had travelled to Ripon were presented with their NVS awards. This included
Ian Archibald’s Fellowship
Certificate, Jean Thomson’s and
Ian Simpson’s Silver medals and
Frank Taylor’s Gold medal, well
done all.
In the same marquee,
alongside the National Championships was the Harrogate Flower Show including the North of England Horticultural Society’s Fruit & Vegetable Championships,
2023 Record beater Jim Brown
The National Carrot, Leek & Potato Championships and The National Onion Championships. Firstly the Harrogate flower show saw a number of tickets awarded to our Scottish
ticket in the Trug competition (4th and 2nd respectively) and in the National Leek competition, Niall Currie came second and Ian Simpson came 4th in the National
Branch members,
including Keith Brand,
who was delighted with
tickets for his Courgettes
and Cherry Tomatoes
(just as well you ordered
your NVS measuring
gauge in time Keith), Ian
Simpson achieved tickets
in the Peas/Mangetout and ‘beans other than green,’ and he won a red ticket for his 15 points and under collection. Meanwhile Jim Pearson received tickets in the pointed
Green Cabbage, Swede Turnips and yes, a red ticket, in the return of the
infamous ‘Red Stick’ Rhubarb. Not to
be outdone Grace Pearson and
Fiona Shenfield were each
awarded a
Carrot Championships. A trip to Malvern was
next on the cards for
Jim Brown, who was inspired the previous year, in seeing Jim Pearson and Ian Simpson having entered the Guiness Book of Records with their winning Broad Bean
Pods (Jim’s Heaviest @ 184g and Ian’s longest @39.6cm). Confident with his own Broad Beans after some great advice from Jim Pearson, Jim Brown set off to Malvern extremely early, heading down to the Giant Veg area. After some most appreciated help from our National President, Medwyn Williams to ensure Jim’s Bean pod was measured and weighed, Jim was absolutely thrilled to be able to report that after his 700 mile round trip (18hrs driving!) he is now the new world record holder for both
the heaviest Broad Bean pod (192g) and the longest Broad Bean pod (43.1cm) retaining the record in
Scotland. Many congratulations to Jim on these new records, great result.
Once again, many congratulations to all our
members who travelled great distances for the love of our
fantastic hobby.
