MILITARY MATTERS
100 Years of Women in the Army
LCpl Greenfield RADC
As a female member of the British
Army, currently serving with the Royal Army Dental Corps, I felt honoured to
be part of the Army Servicewomen’s
100 photograph, to celebrate 100 years since women were first allowed to perform roles within the British Army other than nursing.
On the day of the photograph SSgt Slade- Jones and I, from Dental Centre Aldershot, arrived at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst at 1100hrs to receive the briefing on how the photo would be formed. As
we arrived we were greeted with tea and coffee in Old College, which is a magnificent building.
Many different women from all parts of the Army ranging from Private to Colonel were there to celebrate the successful careers of women in the Army, past and present. We all congregated in Old College and soon made our way outside to take the photograph. We were first separated into alphabetical order and then height order so we could be placed into position forming “W 100”. The process took about 20-30 minutes as it was very windy outside and they were taking the photo by drone. After the aerial photo was taken we had a dispersal photograph taken, after which we made our way back into Old College.
SSgt Slade-Jones and I met up with fellow
RADC colleagues and we all decided that it would also be a good idea to take another photograph of the female members of the RADC present on such an important day. The following were present: WO1 (Corps RSM) Drapier, WO1 Collins, SSgt Slade- Jones, SSgt Beckett, Cpl Bell and myself.
It was a great opportunity for me to be
a part of the celebration of 100 years of Women in the Army. Women in the Army have come a long way in the in the last 100 years, and it is only right to celebrate what all women have achieved alongside their male counterparts and to look forward to what they will continue to achieve whilst representing the British Army.
