Shropshire Cadets Win the National ACF Clay Target Competition
Shropshire ACF won this year’s National Clay Target competition held in Cambridgeshire.
Cdt LCpl Leon Hall, Cdt LCpl Aiden McPaul, Cdt LCpl Oliver Davies and Cdt Edward Taylerson took the ACFA Trophy and outshot their nearest rivals by 9 clays. This competition was a combination of three events comprising of Sporting Shoot, Down the Line and Flush.
Cdt Edward Taylerson also was crowned as the ACF High Shot by outshooting everyone on the Sporting Shoot, winning a silver medal in Down the Line and winning the Rev Gareth Jones Memorial Trophy. He was presented with the High Gun Tankard. A good haul of trophies for his rst competition.
Cdt LCpl Aiden McPaul and Cdt Edward Taylerson were selected to represent the ACF National Team in the Inter Service competition and were presented with their National Colours.
Shropshire ACF had spent time preparing for this competition determined to come back with some silver. The two teams representing the county took part in a selection shoot and then a number of practice shoots at the Buller Clay target range based at Parsons Barracks in Donnington. The local Buller Shooting Club assisted in the coaching of the cadets, which proved invaluable in achieving these results, along with our own in house instructors.
Bridgnorth Army Cadet Awarded by the Lord Lieutenant
In April 2017, Cdt Sjt Stephen Phillips of Bridgnorth Platoon was appointed Lord Lieutenants Cadet at a ceremony held at Shrewsbury Castle, when he was presented with his badge of of ce and a certi cate by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Sir Algernon Heber-Percy.
Cdt Sjt Phillips has demonstrated outstanding character and drive since he joined Bridgnorth Platoon in January 2013. His motivation and enthusiasm towards training and development was recognised very early on in his Cadet career, by his Detachment staff, who have supported him to achieve the complete range of APC levels from his Basic star 3 months after joining through to him completing his Senior Cadet Instructors Cadre early in 2017. The passion that he brings to every task he is given has cascaded through the platoon resulting in Bridgnorth Platoon being one of the strongest ACFs in the county.
Cdt Sjt Phillips has achieved all four of the Army Pro ciency stars in his four years of Cadet service and is earmarked to represent the County at the Master Cadets Course deliver at Frimley Park Cadet Training Centre. He is competent and current in all variants of the weapon systems used in the Cadet Force and has become a very keen shot over the time he has spent in the ACF. He is currently working on his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, which has only been delayed by committing his time towards obtaining his Private Pilot’s licence, for which he already has a number of solo ights logged.
Cdt Sjt Phillips is a keen sportsman and has represented both the County and the Region in a wide range of sporting activities. He continues to plan and organise events both for the ACF, the most recent being support
of the St George’s Day parade in Bridgnorth.

Skiing in Bavaria
In March 2017, led by Capt Chris Nichols, a party of 25 cadets and 3 Adults went to develop their skiing skills. This involved a coach journey and ights from the UK to Germany and a minibus to their base in Burgberg, Bavaria.
The trip was a progressive adventurous training programme using
the medium of Alpine skiing based on the UKCC Snow Sports Snow
life awards and the Joint Services SF1 course. It included elements of snow/mountain survival with lectures including weather and mountain hazards. Skiing was based Balderschwang and Ifan and members
of the group were assessed and split into groups depending upon ability. As well as the skiing, the visit included local swimming pool
in Wonnemar to relax tired muscles after a hard days skiing, a visit to Sontofen with its retail outlets and local cuisine and, on the nal evening the party walked to a nearby hostelry and indulged in a game of skittles and dined on Bratwurst mit Pommes Frites.
