Boxing
3 RIFLES has had a good year on the boxing front. The number of Ri eman interested and partic- ipating in boxing within the battalion continues to grow and there is a healthy pot of boxers and coaches of all experience levels.
In November 2016 the battalion held its annual inter-company boxing competition in Dreghorn Barracks with Fire Support Company crowned as overall winners. The standard of boxing was excellent and, as expected, every Ri eman gave 100%. The event was live-streamed on Facebook, a rst for RIFLES boxing. The live-stream was a huge success with thousands tuning in throughout the night – over 60,000 views – and comments from Ri emen past and present. Rfn Nevin, Fire Support Company was awarded best boxer; an accolade that was fully deserved.
Following the success of the inter-company event, in January 2017 the annual Navy Scotland v Army Scotland boxing xture was held at Faslane. Six of the seven Army Scotland boxers
THE SPORTSMANSHIP AND STANDARD DISPLAYED BY BOTH TEAMS WAS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER AND THE 3 RIFLES TEAM WAS MAGNANIMOUS IN VICTORY
were Ri eman from 3 RIFLES. Though the event resulted in a tie (one bout dropped due to a Navy injury), the Army retained the title as the previous year’s winners. The experience of boxing in front of an extremely partisan Navy crowd will pay dividends for our ghters in the long run.
On 28 June 17 3 RIFLES travelled across the Pentland Hills to take on 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS) at Glencorse for an inter-battalion boxing gala. The team trained for the few weeks leading up to the event and entered with a mixture of trepidation but desire to win. 2 SCOTS put on a fantastic event that demonstrated the very best of both high standard sporting endeavours mixed with military style. In front of Comd 51Bde, the 3 RIFLES boxers excelled and triumphed with a white-wash. The sportsmanship and standard displayed by both teams was of the highest order and the 3 RIFLES team was magnanimous in victory.
The success of the past 12 months coupled with the improvements to the 3 RIFLES boxing facil- ities and training approach places the battalion in a strong position to continue its pursuit of a place in the army inter-unit championships.
