when it matters most
Sue Matson started volunteering with Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough fourteen years ago after the team provided end-of-life care for her younger sister Alison.
She supports charity events and helps raise vital funds to support Sue Ryder’s palliative care and bereavement support services.
Sue explains: “My little sister was cared for
at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in 2009. She was only 40 with a loving husband and two little boys. The hospice team was able to take the fear away from the boys, and as a family, we were given the time to make treasured memories.
“They were just amazing, so that’s when
I started supporting Sue Ryder. Having that personal knowledge of why the charity is so special makes it easy to connect with people.”
Whether in the last months, weeks, or days of life, or living with grief, Sue Ryder helps people live the best life they possibly can. The charity provides palliative care to local families from
its Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in nearby Peterborough and through its Hospice at Home service.
Sue Ryder also offers bereavement support including from its new Grief Kind Spaces
in Bourne and Stamford, Lincolnshire and Peterborough, and Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
“People often say they would like to help Sue Ryder but don’t have any money, not realising you can also give by being a volunteer, taking books and clothing to the Sue Ryder shops, or even leaving a gift in your will.
“Being a fundraising volunteer is so much fun. There are so many different roles
from cheering people on at charity races to marshalling at flagship events like Sue Ryder Starlight Hike, as well as speaking to schools and groups about the fantastic work the charity does, and so much more!” Sue adds.
The charity is currently looking for a wide variety of volunteers, from fundraisers like Sue to complementary therapists and friendly faces to welcome people at the hospice reception. The roles cover various times of the day including weekdays and weekends, so that people can volunteer around their other commitments too.
