SNCO Development Week
by Sgt Daz Wilson-Kean, 105 MWD Sqn
In November 2022 newly promoted SNCO’s from 1 MWD Regt and the DATR. Through
a week of lessons delivered from the Commanding Officer to Sgt. The development week provided a platform for newly promoted Sgts to delve into key topics essential for navigating the complexities of modern military leadership.
The week started by an opening address by the RCMO outlining what the week ahead and why
it was put together. We were
then familiarised with the LUMS platform. Learning how to navigate apps such as Muster, Churchill, PAPMIS and WISMIS. A briefing from one the kennel hands gave us and understanding of the role they play in our MWD’s welfare.
A briefing from the QMSI
MWD on the JSP 960 and MWD Certification followed giving the course an in depth look at the process and what our role in the process is. Ensuring compliance with the regulatory standards while maximising the operational effectiveness of both the Handlers and the MWDS.
The highlight of the week was the SJAR writing day with the Commanding Officer (and her many bars of chocolate). Exploring the mine field that is writing soldiers reports, the full day session gave the course a in depth explanation of what is expected as a 1RO. The CO went through how the reports should be structured and what must be included,
throwing chocolate bars to reward us for getting it right.
To end the week the course was taken into the WOs’ and Sgts’ Mess by the RSM where he went through the mess rules and the etiquette expected by SNCO’s. To wrap up the course and all the speakers from the week were invited to have lunch in the mess (funded by the RSM).
The SNCO development week served as a catalyst for leadership growth and professional development. Armed with newfound knowledge and skills the newly promoted Sgts are better equipped to navigate the challenges ahead of them in their new roles.
