Hospital is to recognise, make assessments of loneliness and social isolation; then suggest interventions which will help to reduce any impacts on a person’s health and wellbeing. As Barrie states, he feels at ease in an environment that
is familiar to him – being able to partake in conversations that he is familiar with, such as discussing the roles of the team, medication, and medical procedures and how they have developed since his days in the RAVC.
Also, something which is very important and much research
has been carried out is the
mutual benefits of relationships intergenerationally. These too have been linked in the improvement
of health and wellbeing for both older and younger individuals. The ability to engage with the younger generations for older adults can help to promote a sense of worth and purpose and help in motivation, reduce any feelings of loneliness,
isolation, depression/anxiety as well as to enhance a person’s cognition. Interacting with the Veterinary team and Household Cavalry personnel clearly has had a positive effect on Barrie’s mood, as a result of carrying out meaningful and purposeful activities that he feels are important to him.
Of course, no visit would be complete without spending time
in the company of the magnificent horses of the Household Cavalry. This is something that Barrie again is very comfortable and happy doing, the smile on his face when we leave the Barracks is well worth my early morning commutes down from Sheffield to London.
We are always extremely grateful to the Veterinary Team and members of the Household Cavalry who we come into contact with for the time they take out to spend with us and value them enormously for their generosity of spirit.
