benefit of the trail running mainly on the western side of the hills and thus in shadow.
Each night the platoon camped at the refuges, as dictated by park authorities, for the most part cooking on gas stoves – and welcoming the steady reduction in weight. On Tuesday 15th August we celebrated OCdt Coles’ birthday at Ascu Stagnu, on the eve of our highest ascent. The celebrations were appropriate if muted, as the next day saw us climb to 2500m, with stun- ning views across the peaks and valleys of the island. Our middle three days were relentless, plunging into valleys only to creep up the rocky mountain beyond, but day five brought a gentler route, with chances to swim in rocky river pools along the way. After a long day of travel from the centre of the island by bus to Corte - along hairy mountain roads - and then by train to Bastia, the team enjoyed some much appreciated beach time before our flight home.

within and outside the Academy. In particular, we are extremely grateful to the Sandhurst Trust for their support in making the expedition pos- sible. We look forward to continuing this spirit of adventure at our units over the years ahead.

On the first morning the team set off to climb Mt Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and England. Equipped with packed lunches and hik- ing gear (or in one team member’s case, chinos
