Peter Carrington 1938.
Peter Alexander Rupert Carrington was born in 1919, the only son of the 5th Baron Carrington. Educated at Eton, he entered Sandhurst in 1937 and succeeded his father as 6th Baron in 1938, shortly before being commissioned into the Grenadier Guards. He wrote in his memoirs: ‘Our waking hours in the first term were filled with drill and cleaning our uniforms. Every movement was a drill – even mounting a bicycle’. Serving for most of the war in the UK, he saw action in the liberation of France and invasion of Germany, being awarded the MC in March 1945. Remaining in the army after the war, he resigned his commission as a major in 1949. Due to his war service, he was unable to take his seat in the House of Lords until October 1945.
