Dennis Shuttleworth 1948.
Dennis William Shuttleworth was born in Leeds on 22nd July 1928 and educated at Roundhay School, where he was head of school and captain of rugby, representing Yorkshire Schools against Wales in 1947. He entered Sandhurst in August 1947 in Blenheim Company, Intake 2, and was poached from his first choice of Royal Artillery by the Academy rugby officer, Major Charles Grieve of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. Graduating third in his intake, Shuttleworth was commissioned into the ‘Dukes’ in December 1948.
In 1951, Shuttleworth was selected as scrum half for the home international at Twickenham against Scotland. In a tight contest, the home side won 3–0. Two years later, after playing for the Barbarians, he was again selected for the Calcutta Cup and helped his side to another victory 26–8 in front of a crowd of 60,000. However, like his fellow Dukes international and army officer, Michael Hardy, the Korean War put paid to his international career. After service in Korea, Shuttleworth served in Malta, in Cyprus during counter-insurgency operations, for which he was MiD, and in Northern Ireland. He played for the Army 22 times and continued to play for the Dukes, with his last match in the Army Cup final of 1962.
Promoted lieutenant-colonel, he commanded his regiment from 1967 to 1970 in Germany and Hong Kong before a tour as a staff officer in Germany, for which he was awarded the OBE. After a tour with NATO as a colonel, he was promoted to again and served as the King’s Division Brigadier and inspector of army physical and adventurous training before he retired in 1982. A second career as school’s liaison officer for Yorkshire and Humberside saw him nurture the next generation of soldiers. He also served as a SSAFA case worker, providing welfare support to former service personnel.
