Dennis Shuttleworth continued his long association with rugby during retirement, as president of English Schools Rugby from 1990 to 1995. Earlier, as president of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), he did much to establish the gateway between the union and league codes and remove the life bans imposed by the RFU on any player who had played amateur rugby league. His pragmatic approach and understanding of the glacial workings of the RFU were summed up by his answer to an approach from Maurice Oldroyd of the British Amateur Rugby League Association: ‘I’ve heard everything that you’ve said, and we can either make a decision or not – and we’re pretty damned good at the latter!’ Dennis Shuttleworth died in York in April 2002.
