Bromley was BBC Radio’s first specialist sports commentator. By the time he retired in 2001, he had commentated on 202 classic races, including 42 Grand Nationals – over 10,000 races in total. Always meticulously prepared, he stuck silhouettes of jockeys onto each racing card and then coloured the various silks by hand to aid with identification during the race. These were later presented to the winning jockeys of the Derby and Grand National and are now much prized at auction. Retiring to Suffolk, Peter Bromley, the voice of racing, died on 3rd June 2003.
