1224 WHARFEDALE ADVENTURES IN STEM
By Pilot Officer Samantha Cook
The past six months has seen 1224 Wharfedale Squadron embark on a renewed program of STEM activities.
Cadets have taken part in paper bridge building competitions, catapult construction and paper model rocket building as part of introducing the blue and bronze space syllabus.
We also successfully ran both the CREST Discovery and Bronze awards with different cohorts of cadets. The younger cadets achieved their Discovery awards
after investigating the flight of hoop gliders whilst the older cadets spent several parade nights building and refining designs for a chariot to be pulled by a Sphero programmable robot. The Crest Awards are Nationally recognized and allow our cadets to explore scientific projects and develop their independent research skills, team work and problem solving.
Cadets designed and built a chariot to carry and egg around a track. They then programmed their Sphero robot to race around the track, using scratch programming blocks.
