a recent example of this in use was in a meeting with OFSTED to discuss safety in colleges.
IN ADDITION AND NOT TO BE OUTDONE, POTTED FACTS ON THE ADULT RECIPIENTS HAVE ALSO BEEN ADDED BELOW:
In 2019 CAPTAIN VALERIE JOHNSON was appointed into her current role as the county Adjutant
and continues to play a prominent role in staff development. She has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion and has actively encouraged the take up of officer roles by female adults.
CAPTAIN MICHAEL JOHNSON has completely overhauled the administration within the Company, creating and implementing better, more innovative ways of working whilst attempting to reduce the expectations placed on the adult volunteers. He
has helped to create and deliver the County level detachment commander training package and has recently been involved in creating a pilot course aimed at preparing volunteers for positions such as Staff Officer, Training Officer and Company Sergeant Major.
LIEUTENANT DONNA REA is driven by her passion to see others develop and participate in activities which would normally be out of their reach; she pushes all aspects of cadet training, in particular, qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, First Aid and CVQO which will help the cadets as they develop, leave school, to seek out employment or further education.
2/LT SHARON NORTH leads from the front and
can be seen supporting both band; playing in the support of an event, or marching at the head of her Detachment proudly displaying their skills and ability within the community. Her aspirations are to be
able to bring greater experiences to a wider Cadet audience.
ADULT UNDER OFFICER NICHOLA BOYCE who is talented at First Aid, took on the role as the Company First Aider and covered all training events with real life medical support. Her willingness to support activities and learn new skills found her with the Shooting team and she soon became an excellent coach with the cadets. Her positive approach to everything, sees her putting 100% in to every task she does. The cadets say, ‘that on your darkest day, having AUO Boyce come around is like having a bag of Haribo with laughter on the side’.
SERGEANT INSTRUCTOR MICHAEL BOTTERILL
has been instrumental in the success of bringing together Beverley Grammar School and Beverley Town Detachments to the new Wolfe Armoury Detachment. His hard work has reflected in the message given by cadets to other young people to

join the detachment. A steady upward trend from
6 to 35 cadets (and still growing) shows how well Beverley Detachment is developing and is a “place to be” for young people to be a part of.
WARRANT OFFICER ELLEN LOWE is an integral member of staff within the wider Wing, constantly availing herself to lend support across many units, regardless of location. More recently, her advanced organisational skills came to the fore when, due to staffing shortages, she agreed to take control of 399 (Beverley) Squadron, steering them through a very difficult period of change. This was in addition to dealing with the staffing shortages encountered by her own unit.
STAFF SERGEANT INSTRUCTOR LEWIS WILDE has excelled within his role of Public Relations Officer for the Company, this has been vital for communication over the several lockdowns and closures, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. He arranged several ‘Zoom’ sessions with guest speakers to try and keep the cadets and adults engaged. This was a huge success enabling a much smoother reopening of units following the return to normal operations.
FLIGHT LIEUTENANT PAUL SMITH applied to join the 2012 Adventurous Training Expedition to Nepal and, following a strenuous selection process, found himself as one of the adult leaders accompanying the cadets on the trip in July 2012. As a measure of his “can do” attitude, although he had never been
to the Himalayas previously, he stepped up to the mark to take command of the expedition when the nominated Team Leader unexpectedly dropped out less than a month before departure. His steady hand and guidance ensured that the cadets and adults on the expedition, some 25 in total, enjoyed a distinctly challenging four weeks in the Himalayas reaching the base camp for Mount Everest and climbing to some 5400 metres altitude.
SERGEANT JOHN DALEY worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, not just running online lessons but also social meet-ups for cadets and virtual parades that were seen as far afield as the Falkland Islands. These were so successful that he managed to keep his entire detachment together throughout lockdown and actively had cadets looking to join the detachment once restrictions were eased.
When SMI ANN BOWERS joined the Corps of Drums she had no musical knowledge; therefore, in order to deliver the music syllabus, she taught herself how to play an instrument. Her pride in her cadets and her commitment to military music prompted her
to contact regular regiments to source equipment. She was successful in obtaining drums from the Royal Armoured Corps band and new ceremonial uniforms from the Royal Logistic Corps. In addition to the standard Cadet annual camp, SMI Bowers attends an additional two music camps, and has also spearheaded the creation of a series of County level music courses.
STAFF SERGEANT REBECCA MONTGOMERY’S
dedication to others is also shown in her work for good causes. She is a dedicated fundraiser and has led cadets and other groups in raising thousands
