Before the big day, all members of the coronation procession rehearsed in their respective locations across the UK. Members of the Rifles and The Band of The Rifles, along with other regiments and bands rehearsed at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The daylight rehearsal took place at RAF Odiham and the night-time rehearsal took place in London, on the exact processional route. Both were incredibly long but rewarding experiences that helped each group to understand their role on the procession, and ensure timings were achievable. The coronation was a once in a lifetime experience. Although it was incredibly tough, every person put their best (blistered and bruised!) foot forward for King and Country, and did our nation proud. Marching alongside representatives from dif- ferent regiments, corps and even countries is a rare opportunity, so seeing the lines of different uniforms made us all stand that extra bit taller. The atmosphere was almost unreal, filled with anticipation, excitement, and most of all, pride.
GIBRALTAR
Celebrations of our monarchy did not end at the Coronation! One month later, the band were flown out to Gibraltar to support The Band and Corps of Drums of The Gibraltar Regiment with their contributions to the King’s Birthday Celebrations. The unit’s first engagement of the tour was the Freedom of the City Parade. The weather was very warm for those who marched through the city square amongst huge crowds of people. We also supported the first ever King’s Birthday Party, held in the Covent Garden of the Office of The Governor, providing a full band and brass quintet. Our final engagement was performing at the King’s Birthday Parade which was inspected by His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar, who is the representative of HM King Charles III.
Despite the fact we were busy with high-profile events, the unit also had some down time, and chances to do some water-based AT. Members of the unit were able to go caving in The Rock of Gibraltar, as well as walk to the very top to take in the sights (and meet the famous monkeys of course!). We also had a go at pad- dleboarding, were taken out in powerboats, and lots of swimming in the sea. The Band and Bugles had a great 2 weeks out in the sun, and are excited for similar tours in the near future!
