                                FOREWORD
BY THE COLONEL COMMANDANT
LIEUTENANT GENERAL T R COPINGER-SYMES CBE
Looking back on 2023, it has again been dominated by the ongoing struggle against Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine. But, as the year has drawn to a close, we have also been reminded of the potential for devastating conflict in the Middle East, with the terrible events of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict threat- ening further instability across the region. I am extremely proud to say that the Regiment continues to contribute significantly to the UK effort in support of the people of Ukraine and in helping to understand the factors at play in the wider Middle East.
It is in this increasingly unstable international environment that I have assumed the role of Colonel Commandant. I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor and friend, General Sir Patrick Sanders, whose years of service to the Regiment have left us in a position of strength, with a reputation second to none in the Infantry and Army, and with Riflemen deployed and employed in critical areas across Defence. Without his foresight and skilled diplomacy during the last Defence Review, the Regiment might have looked very different. I am deeply honoured and humbled to take on this mantle. I will work tirelessly for my fellow Riflemen and all the pillars of the Regiment.
I am continually inspired by the determination, adaptability, and selflessness of our Riflemen, both regular and reserve. Our battalions have been continuously
