members of the Battalion also participated in the 1st (UK) Division’s cyber war- fare competition with such success that, despite starting as novices, some will now participate in a Rifles Team at an international military cyber competition in Singapore in 2024.
Our tempo in military training has been mirrored in adventurous training where we have sailed in the Caribbean, canoed on the Amazon, and skied down the Alps, although unfortunately a long-planned trekking expedition to the Atlas Mountains had to be cancelled due to the Moroccan earthquake. On the sporting front we have the only Reservist in the Infantry Alpine Ski Team whilst one of our Riflemen has recently been crowned Army Women’s Enduro Cycling Champion.
Community Engagement has remained a key Battalion activity, including having the honour to march past Your Royal Highness at the Armed Forces Day National Event in Truro and exercising our freedom of Wellington and Exeter. The Battalion has also conducted regular Bugle Breakfasts across the Southwest which remain a key opportunity to engage with our Reservists’ civilian employers and other key local leaders.
Our Salamanca Band and Bugles have played vigorously across the Southwest and enjoyed a successful tour of Spain in May. They also performed at His Majesty The King’s Birthday Parties in His Majesty’s Embassies in Madrid, Bratislava, and Prague, and more recently have helped us to commemorate our forebears’ sacri- fices at Remembrance events in England, Spain, and Serbia.
