Naturally Hemington
Planning was granted in August for a
new natural burial ground near Oundle. Hemington Natural Burial Ground aims to offer something different from a traditional cemetery. Here each burial contributes to the creation of a new woodland, with the vision of enhancing the existing landscape and providing a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Natural burial – or green burial as it is sometimes called – provides an environmentally sensitive and sustainable option to families
The site is just outside the village
of Hemington, only 10 minutes from
Oundle. It sits atop a hill nestled
between existing woodlands and with
open countryside views of the valley
beyond. Native trees and wildflowers
will be planted and nurtured. Paths will
be managed to facilitate access, whilst other areas left to grow wilder and encourage wildlife and biodiversity.
The burial ground will evolve as burials
take place and more trees are planted. Helen Roberts, who will manage the burial ground on her family farm, has a connection with the land which goes back four generations. For her, natural burial means leaving something behind
Native trees and wildflowers will be planted and nurtured
looking to lay their loved one to rest or those planning their own end of life care. All materials used, including the coffin, are chosen to be biodegradable with the intention of being able to return to the earth in time.
Both full burial and ash internments will be accommodated on the site. The burial ground will welcome people from all faiths and beliefs and allow
relative freedom over the burial ceremony, with families and friends able to tailor it to best suit the wishes of the deceased and those left behind.
