Rebecca Miles opened Blue Bamboo on
the 10th June this year. It was a long term admiration of the building itself that inspired her to open the shop. When she saw the building was available, she booked a viewing and fell in love with the space and light within.
What made you choose Oundle? I’m local
to the area, live locally in Nassington and have elderly parents living in Oundle. All of our children have gone to school here (Laxton and latterly Prince William) so I’ve been wandering round the town for years as a customer and now after years of wanting a shop, here I am.
Favourite plant in stock today? I have many! The Alocasia Cucullata for they are modest in size, but still a great specimen plant around 100cm, relatively easy to maintain and has beautiful big elephant ear type leaves. The Alocasia Zebrina for their wacky zebra striped stems and long leafy foliage. The Calethea Orbiflora, I have a beautiful one in store right now, that I admire for it’s big and flouncy leaves.
Palms, I adore all palms for their shear elegance, we always have a few available and as with all the plants, we are able to source larger or smaller ones to order.
What is the best thing about your job?
Delivery day! I just love it, it’s like Christmas! I’m often found helping the delivery guys with stock off the lorry. It got a bit confusing once when I said “oh, you’re nice” to a plant, and the driver replied “thank you, I don’t hear that every day”! I have a few super suppliers who have the most incredible plant stock. My customers are fabulous too, most love to talk about the plants
I have in store or they already own and I think chatting to anyone who has a similar interest is always nice. It’s a lovely feeling to have people coming back repeatedly too.
Have you any plans to expand further? Yes, I am planning on branching out to commercial plant hire and maintenance to businesses,
the hospitality sector, covering events such as weddings too. Plants make a space much more
